They have no teeth for grinding food and reducing particle size. Instead the esophagus enters a proventriculus which is a simple glandular stomach where some digestive enzymes are released. This is followed by a gizzard which is a muscular organ used for grinding feed. Most digestion takes place in the small and large intestine (more than in other monogastrics). Consequently, poultry require a higher quality diet than most other animals."
